Missing the foster mom

Mei and Fen have been raised by a foster mother and father in their home since just a few days after they were found. When we arrived in Nanchang on Thursday our guide gave us information provided by the foster mother regarding their care - including their schedule, what they eat, preferences, etc. That has been a big help. We did not have a chance to meet her since it was the orphanage director and staff members who brought the girls to us.

It seems like Mei and Fen are missing her today. They woke up a bit cranky (although still pretty cheerful) and just had a different vibe. They played with us some, but they are a little more fussy. We did have a good breakfast and both girls devoured sweet potato and steamed eggs, but it was difficult to put them down for their nap when we came back to the room.

Our agency guide says this is actually a good sign that they are a bit out of sorts now. It means they are mourning that relationship and will probably bond with us more quickly. Probably the first day was so stimulating, being with us and running all over the city, that they did not have a chance to realize this was actually going to be a permanent change for them. Now they are fatigued and want the comforting they know well.

Evelyn said that the first three days are usually the most challenging and after that things start to smooth out as a routine gets established and we bond a little more.

Even with being a bit more fussy, they continue to be very cooperative and forgiving of our missteps.
